About Currahee Artists' Guild

--The Currahee Artists’ Guild was founded in 1990 by artists and arts supporters, who envisioned an organization that would provide support for local artists and, at the same time, introduce art and its creations to children and other adults in Toccoa, Stephens County and the Blue Ridge Mountain Foothills.

--Founders were Bill Harris, Deborah Hartley, Carole Neal, Jack Roberts, Barbara Wulf and Julius Johnson.

--Today, more than 50 members comprise the Guild and participate in two major exhibitions and competitions, judged by arts professionals in our region. Other guild activities include Meet the Artists exhibits, one-person shows, workshops and demonstrations.  Unless otherwise noted, artwork is available for sale

--Two venues in Toccoa offer opportunities for artists to display their work.  Art is rotated monthly at the Cornerstone Restaurant and The Studio located on the mall downtown.

--The Spring Show draws member and non-member participants from across the South.  The show not only showcases the artistic talents of members, but also welcomes the art of young people from all schools in the area—public, private and home--One highlight of the Spring Show is the “Cleo W. Alexander Competition,” sponsored by Harold Alexander, proprietor of Alexander’s Florist in Toccoa, to honor his mother.  The competition, always a floral subject is open to anyone who wishes to enter, with no fee for entry.  Mr. Alexander provides a generous cash award to the winner.

--The Spring Show in 2002 was dedicated to Julius M. Johnson, an original guild founded and well-known local business leader.  The Guild established the Julius M. Johnson Award to honor this strong advocate and supporter and to recognize artists who demonstrate unique creative significance in any medium.

--The Fall Show is held in conjunction with Toccoa’s Fall Festival and also is open to members and artists throughout the surrounding area. Guild membership is not required to participate in the Spring or Fall Show.

--The Guild sponsors the Dwight M. Andrews Scholarship, which awards a $500 scholarship each year to a senior high school student who plans to study art.  Dwight Andrews was a beloved art coordinator for Stephens County and the Guild’s founding members chose to honor his memory by pledging this gift.  The Stephens County High School art department nominates deserving students.  To date, ten scholarships have been awarded.--The Guild is supported by dues of its members, show entry fees and the generosity of many of Toccoa’s leading businesses.
